What is balance, really?
Hi all,
Our quest to achieve balance often feels like a losing battle.
Rather than beating ourselves up over finding balance, I propose that we A) begin viewing balance as a daily process rather than a destination, and B) realize that balance is really about expending our energy and replenishing our energy.
We spend a large amount of our time doing, producing, going, moving, etc. All of these actions are necessary for modern living. And, when we don’t also prioritize being, pausing, breathing, resting, etc., we can begin to feel overwhelmed, burned out, exhausted - out of balance.
It’s easy for me to say “spend the same amount of time each day resting as you do working!” (Yeah, right). It’s not about the amount of time we spend, rather it’s about paying attention to when we are feeling depleted, and taking action to replenish ourselves - even breathing for 30 seconds.
When we take moments to “be” each day, in addition to “do,” not only will we “do” more effectively, but we will feel more balanced.
As you know, I am a huge advocate of integrating short, easy practices into your day to replenish yourself - and sometimes, if we’ve been in constant go-mode for a long time, we also need something longer in order to decompress.
If that is you, try this practice (also linked below). It is an hour-long Yin practice (with some productivity tips at the beginning) that will help to decompress your nervous system. You can take moments from this practice into each day. Try it, and let me know how it goes!
More soon,
Nicolle
